Sarah F. Ives

Social Scientist, Writer, and Educator

 

I am an anthropologist, researcher, writer, and editor.

I currently teach anthropology at City College of San Francisco. I previously taught anthropology and writing and rhetoric at Stanford University from 2013 to 2018.

In addition to scholarly work published in peer-reviewed journals and books, I have written for National Geographic News, National Geographic Kids News, and Sierra Magazine. My correspondence has appeared in Nature. I have also provided research and editorial assistance for the Environmental Paper Network and Stanford University Press, as well as for individual scholars, authors, students, and non-profit organizations.

As a Fulbright and Mellon scholar, I earned my Ph.D. from Stanford University’s Department of Anthropology. I hold an M.A. in geography from the University of Washington and a B.A. in geography with environmental studies from Dartmouth College.

My areas of focus include environmental studies, gender studies, comparative studies in race and ethnicity, and southern Africa.

I published my first book, Steeped in Heritage: The Racial Politics of South African Rooibos Tea, with Duke University Press in 2017.
